It's not always us stepping into the form and into the fray. Sometimes the risk that you take is someone pushing you. So whether that's impostor syndrome or something else - the idea that you're taking on a challenge before you might feel fully ready - that's what all of us, I think, should be doing in our careers, right? That's how we get better. This was a great example of that for me, having never done it before, assuming I would know how to do it exactly perfectly would be crazy.Įmbracing the discomfort of something new and something challenging - I think it's part of how we learn and grow. I think, to me, one of the most important things I've always said is taking risks in your career - sort of pushing yourself to do things that make you uncomfortable - that's how we learn and grow and develop. I think most people have it, right? If you don't you probably don't have the level of humility that you need. Would you say sometimes the biggest challenge is - and I have it - imposter syndrome? And all of these things were sort of coming at us from the world around us and, you know, just mustering up the belief that I was ready to be in the role and I was feeling confident in that role. And we had a supply-chain crisis, and we had, you know, war in Ukraine. So I started in 2020, which was in the middle of COVID. That was the biggest challenge, particularly given what was going on in the world. ![]() That moment of working towards something and then you finally get that job and you think, "Oh, am I ready to do this?" I think that's probably in the beginning. It's probably been the biggest challenge. I think the challenge always is feeling like you're ready for the role when you get it. ![]() ![]() Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders.

Q: If hybrid work is the future, should cities and counties change how they approach housing?Ī: We should focus on building housing in the downtown areas to build up the customer base for stores and restaurants that are downtown. There is now some momentum for hybrid work, however. People still have income, but they are not physically in the downtown areas, so they are not physically spending their money downtown. Q: How has the move to work-from-home because of COVID-19 impacted the downtown areas in San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco?Ī: Work-from-home has hit the downtowns a lot, downtown San Jose, downtown Palo Alto, where I work. It will probably be easier for the very skilled tech workers who got laid off to find jobs fairly quickly. Q: Will tech companies shift from layoffs back to a lot of hiring?Ī: We may be entering a period of renewed growth for tech. You are seeing more optimism now for tech. If you look at the big tech companies, they are all doing really well. But we may be seeing the end of the layoffs.Ī: The tech companies see the potential for artificial intelligence and electric vehicles, the new industries. These layoffs are painful for the people who are losing their jobs. Q: Where are we now with the tech layoffs in the Bay Area?Ī: I view the layoffs as a short-term rebalancing of tech workforces. But the signals are there that it’s possible. It would be a one-time, very lucky event if it happens. Q: How likely is a soft landing at this point?Ī: We haven’t had a soft landing in a while. jobs report for July showed that hiring has cooled off and it’s in line with the idea that a soft landing is now possible. Is a soft landing possible for the economy?Ī: The U.S. Q: Some experts predict the economy will slow down to stop inflation yet not slow down so much that we have a recession. The state has to solve its housing and transportation challenges, however. Q: How does the California economy look over a longer-term period?Ī: I feel optimistic. The ports are doing better in California and the airports around the state are improved. ![]() The dock workers’ strike against the shippers was settled fairly quickly. But we also see a track record of strikes getting settled in Southern California. ![]() Q: Could the strikes affecting Hollywood studios create a downturn in Southern California?Ī: We do have the actors’ and the writers’ strikes in Southern California. Q: What’s your assessment of the California economy overall in the near term?Ī: California is in pretty good shape and Southern California is actually doing fairly well. This time, after COVID, we are still adding jobs on a net basis. Q: Is the Bay Area able to withstand these ups and downs fairly well?Ī: We have a record of resilience from the 2000 dot-com bust and the 2008 foreclosure crisis. A: Between the electric vehicle technologies, artificial intelligence and clean energy, the Bay Area is really in pretty good shape to be competitive over the long term. ![]() MIDI? The narrow stairs to her hotel room were barely wide enough for her luggage. Take, for example, a romantic novel in which two characters meet in a seaside tourist town. Time is a crucial element of setting and plot because the ‘when’ of the story can add tension or constraint, yielding a greater need for development and/or resolution. So how do you create a compelling inciting incident? 1. In romance novels and movies, an inciting event is nearly always the moment that the couple-to-be meets for the first time. Another example is the moment Dorothy is picked up by a cyclone in The Wizard of Oz and the moment when Luke Skywalker receives Princess Leia’s message in Star Wars. Inciting incident examples include the moment when Katniss Everdeen’s sister’s name is drawn and she decides to take her place in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. Campbell’s term for the inciting incident is the ‘call to adventure’. In a study on many myths and folk tales, Campbell observed similar incidents in many myths. The inciting incident also fits Joseph Campbell’s description of the ‘hero’s journey’.
